Growing pains in children

The term "growing pains" in children typically refers to aching of the leg or knee, usually at night and usually in young males. A new term "Ubiquitous Limb Pains of Childhood" has now been adopted by many. This is actually more appropriate because the term "growing pains" insinuates that it hurts to grow. This simply is not the case.

Pain in the lower limb of a child at night must be evaluated to rule out serious health concerns such as bone tumor, infection, fracture, etc. Of course these entities are not very common, but since they are serious they must be considered above all else. Obviously fracture would be preceded by trauma so that is not too hard to eliminate. Infections of the bones or joints will generally be accompanied by fever, swelling ad redness of the area. Tumor pain is usually "unremitting", it does not stop by changing positions. All three of these entities can be ruled out by x-ray examination of the affected area and of the opposite side for comparison.

Once these causes of pain are ruled out, we are left with "Ubiquitous Limb Pains of Childhood", in other words, medical science says they have no idea why the pain is there.

Chiropractors have successfully treated pain of this type for years. The classic picture of this disorder is deep dull aching of the knee, no history of trauma, pain may wake child at night, does not occur every night, most common after a day of intense physical exertion. Examination of the knee is usually normal, but in most cases a misaligned pelvis will be found. Once corrected, the knee pains will usually stop.
