Antibiotics in children
An antibiotic is a
class of drugs designed to kill bacteria. Before the advent of antibiotics
between the 1940's and 1950's, people would die from bacterial infections
at alarming rates.
Potentially fatal
conditions then are a mere nuisance now if treated in time with the proper
antibiotic.
Today, antibiotics
are a major part of our lives. Unfortunately, there are some doctors who
have forgotten the basic science behind antibiotics and freely prescribe
them for all kinds of problems like earaches, colds , flu and viral sore
throats.
Not only are these
drugs not effective against these "non-bacterial" ailments, but worse,
over-exposure to antibiotics can damage a child's health.
Serious health
complications can occur when antibiotics are routinely given. That's
because they kill the normal healthy bacteria that live inside our bodies
and help us. Without the "good" bacteria we are overcome by bad bacteria.
When to give antibiotics:
When there is clear
evidence of a bacterial infection like Strep throat, bronchitis, infected
wound, tooth abscess, severe unremitting ear infection, etc.
When to be leery of a doctor who prescribes an
antibiotic:

It is often what he/she does
with very little exam or explanation

Before a throat has been
cultured
-
When your child has a cold or
flu for less than a week
-
Before trying a period of 48-72
hours observation for an earache in a child older than 6 months who is not
severely ill.
